I'm cheating on the focal length, explanation to follow.
I've had a cackle of 40 or 50 grackles all summer. They of course dominate everything but the blue jays, But as a result, the smaller birds are in the habit of barging in and getting the best seats, sometimes when my hands are still on the feeders. The nuthatch sits on the bill of my baseball cap. As soon as the chopped nuts are spread on the horizontal feeder, it's pig out time for the samall birds. Hence, I can stand 3 feet away. They like it, the large birds won't come near. As long as I'm there, they keep coming back. The Pine Siskins just sit on the feeder, close enough I could probably grab one.

The chickadees are quick, it takes a lot of shots to get one you like.
And my buddy the nuthatch. There's two so far, and they are always fighting. I suspect siblings. There' also a White Breasted Nuthatch, but, there's no pictures to date. He hasn't figured out the routine yet.
