I think this is a juvenile Grey Shrike-thrush but I'm sure Des will know one way or the other:

K3, DA*300, Tamron 1.4 TC.

Do you have any pictures of your FA*300mm F2.8 that you can post. I would like to change my Sigma 300mm f2.8 EX DG and get one instead.
Here are a couple using the Pentax K3 and the Pentax FA 300mm f/2.8

I'm not Des, but my 2 bob's worth says it's a female Rufous Whistler.

Cheers,
Terry

That was my first (and second) thought, but it is perhaps too white on the under parts and has a slightly hooked beak.

I certainly wouldn't offer you odds on your 2 bob.

Hello Craig,
I have seen them with colouring that looks similar to your pic.
The red eye was a strong clue for me, also I see Pizzey and Knight's image of the Whistler does look like a slight hook on the beak, but none of the guides I have actually mention that for either of the birds, although most do show the hook for the thrush.
You need a few more shots from other angles...I'm sure the bird will oblige :-)

Cheers,
Terry

Yeah, definitely not a GST. It looks like the adult female Rufous Whistler depicted in Morcombe and in the ABG. Although the hooked bill isn't clearly shown, the ABG says, in describing the genus, that all the whistlers have "slightly hooked bills".

Ok, I bow to superior expertise.

However, trawling the inter-web-thingy for images leaves me convinced that there is often more variation between individuals within a species than there may be between two different species.

As Terry says it's hard to tell for sure from a single photo, but I've got my doubts about the Wikimedia photo too. ;-)

There are several things that distinguish young or female GSTs from the whistlers. Amongst other things, shrike-thrush have bigger bills, both proportionately and in absolute terms; and young GSTs have a prominent red stripe above the eyes. Like this:

And while the adult females have striations on the throat, they aren't very prominent and don't extend so far down.

I've got my doubts about a lot of image attribution on the net.

On a safer note:

I've joined the DA*300 club unfortunately just as the cricket season ends so I will have to find other uses for it.

First bird shots with New to me Tamron 300m mm F2.8 60 B

These were taken after we got back from Palo Duro Canyon a couple of weeks ago. These PALE in comparison to all the other great pics on here. These are all hand held with the little black rounded thing that came with the lens and the 1.4 converter. Most all were taken at 1/250 and f /16 or there abouts and ISO 400. Hope to get better with it as I get mote time with it
The only PP is to crop the images. These little suckers sure are hard to keep in the viewfinder
