As best I could determine, male grouse display ("drumming" and tail spreading) only when defending a territory and trying to woo a mate, which will primarily be in the Spring, roughly April & May, with the exact time period probably different depending on whether farther north or south within the range of the species. The information on the Roughed Grouse Society site is a little imprecise on this point. However, especially with changing climate conditions, there may be an outlier male that will display earlier or later than the documented times. Genetic variation and evolution happen.

Not the most productive time of year for bird photography and a hot sunny day, but a few showed themselves.

LWD Macro

Not my usual choice of macro lens, but these butterflies were so active in the heat of the day that I couldn't get near them. Step forward the DA* 300, and breathe:

I'm slowly getting accustomed to the Sigma 170-500. Here at 500mm on a K-1, taken in a zoo:

Bigma @ nominal 400mm, African giant kingfisher with a crab that he repeatedly bashed against the cement. It's a wonder the crab wasn't reduced to mush. It's a wonder the kingfisher didn't get a splitting headache.

Sharing the Lesser Whistling Duckling family, the cute ducklings were reduced from the total of 11, only left with 4 on last week

Still need about one month plus to fledge..

Interesting comment that. I was quite disappointed with my new 300mm DA* F4 1.4 TC WR combination in the heat of the day with atmospheric distortions, but when it is a bit cooler everything works fine....

This one posted the street threads shows quite considerable distortions of the further vehicle. Taken with 300 before I acquired the TC. Will a longer reach, good quality lens like the DA560 make it better? Then my life will be difficult, because I then will try to get one

Those distortions are caused by scintillation, an atmospheric effect due to thermal air movement.

No lens can get rid of it. But since it is more noticeable with tele lenses, to get rid of it as a visual distraction, use a wide lens. But that is not how you wanted to frame.
