The lake level has gone down so a bit of mud was exposed at my favourite local shorebird spot yesterday.

Great Blue Heron

Lesser Yellowlegs

Solitary Sandpiper

Killdeer

Thanks Luftluss. It's two years since I've been able to get shorebirds there. Last year it was all dried up and this year the water was too deep up until now.
BTW I used the Pentax K-3, DA*300mm and DA 1.4x TC.

Well done.

The image below is a scan from a chrome, a zoo specimen, so it might be something shorter than 300mm (no record or recollection) but I suspect I was using a 300mm f4 APO Macro Sigma

I love the Killdeer shot, but around here it is so rare to see them near water, despite their shorebird ancestry. They are quite the upland creature, nesting in corn and soybean fields, and sometimes large graveled parking lots.

Cracking series Steven. #7 is my favourite - excellent detail and a perfect reflection of the Sandpiper.

Scan from a chrome, so no data to confirm, but this was probably taken with a Sigma 300mm f4 APO Macro

Thanks GoatsNdonkey - that's pretty much the case here as well. Perhaps the bird was thinking "what's going on? - it was baked dry here last year".

Thanks Des - I'm hoping to revisit that location and see if I can get a bit more variety. Solitary Sandpipers like woodland pools with logs and fallen trees and this is a good spot for them.

our guide assured us that these young male hippos that we found in the Serengeti were in the prelims

the one with the smaller jaws would back down before any serious damage was done

note the dust they killed up but I remember very little noise

Another fine shot Steven.

Very dramatic Allen. Great get.

Sitting on the fence. A male Australian King Parrot in West Gippsland, Victoria. KP and 55-300 PLM at 300. Handy combination: 3200 ISO comes up pretty well with the KP, and the PLM can provide good resolution and pleasant bokeh.

Incidentally, I am finding 4:3 crops often work well for bird portraits - allows for more negative space in front of the bird than the native 3:2 ratio does.
