Hmmm, how common is common, how rare is rare? These shots were taken in a large suburban bush park (250 hectares 620 acres). The people that are the best at spotting them counted 26 in one day but there may be 2, 3, 4 times that number (and those 26 now have new chicks). There is a 3 hectare 8 acre park across the road from me that probably has 1 or 2 pairs but I haven't seen any.

Or to put it another way, probably more common than Pentax shooters (I think I'm the only one in the 250 hectare park)

The little one hasn't learned to become a branch yet. Cute.
Even the adults will stare at you sometimes, I've even had them stretching and preening. But yes, most of the time they are just branches.

Perhaps suburbs?

A different bird still on the nest with the fluffy feathers of a youngster just visible. Taken on the same day:

I put our bird feeder up yesterday. Early this morning I braved the cold with my K-3, 300/4.5 F* and Metz flash to catch this house finch. 1/180th, f7.1, ISO 400.

Well, all suburbs are in cities, Craig!

I've seen them in Royal Park, North Carlton, along the Merri Creek in Fitzroy, Fawkner Park in South Yarra. They just need the trees.

They got eyes of owls.

Sure have, Swip!

But of course, it's all about the feet.

Owls like hawks grab mice or whatever with their claws, these things use their beak on insects like most other birds.

Guilty as charged. Although at $A411 on sale it's pretty hard to resist the siren call of the PLM, with or without my influence.

Thank you for the info my friend! Also beautiful image! Now this one reminds me of the little owls here in Europe.

Beautiful and impressive caption! Great timing. Is it taken from a boat?

Thank you very much, we’re very lucky here... these were taken from the shore with a shortish lens (300mm).

I wouldn't have guessed it! That makes it even more impressive as a spectacle! It's not something you see very often
