Female northern cardinal. Tamron 400/4 model 65b, Pentax K5iis, ISO 500 1/400th @ f/5, 100 percent crop. Manfrotto monopod used for support. The classic Tamron has the best bokeh of any telephoto lens I’ve ever used, and I’ve used dozens.

mirror frustrations

Wanna see a horrid mirror pic?

yep its a good one. And I was trying so hard, resting the lens on a bean bag on my knee and trying to focus in magnified live view (not far off...). It's the sigma 400mm (mine is the black one without tripod mount) and it has proved to be a tricksy one, even by mirror standards. However, slightly to my surprise, some diligent efforts in LR have produced some presentable results.

The white throats were the most co-operative. And I have to say, although the tamron 400mm is easier to focus, and produces cleaner and distinctly sharper pics, it would have been a problem with these, because the subject distance was less than the cfd of ~9m.

This was the sharpest effort.

1:1 pixel peep crop.

And the most pleasing pic.

As for the pipit, well fortunately I have a DFA 150-450mm...

It must be boredom that makes you use the 400 mirror at all. I don't think I would bother for any other reason. My M 400 only focuses down to 5m/16.5ft, but a 50 mm extension tuber brings it close enough for a 5x7 inch (127 mm x 178 mm) sized target.

This bear here wasn't being scared off. Several people, loud barking dog, air horns. Not normal bear behaviour, though it wasn't being aggressive either. Not cropped, by the way...

While not the best shot technically, I quite like the bear's pose and back lighting here. Only cropped from landscape orientation to portrait.

Both shots with A 400/5.6 on K-50.

Uncropped? I'm now looking for the anxious emoticon. Anyway, nice shots, also the one with the backlit bear. Must be impressive to see in real life.

Here are some of my shots with the green star M300/4. First an abstract cloud and then a male roe deer.
