I took my stupid Nikon lens to a pond. Attached to my hacksaw-modified tripod so it can sit lower, and having the sun behind me, it's starting to seem like a pretty useable combo.

Small duck, 100% crop

"yes I just opened the Photoshop preview and hit 'auto' then took a screenshot" duck

Probably a duck, 100% crop

When packing up, some gulls(?) started flying around and I thought I'd try some BIF off-tripod for a laugh. It was a challenge with manual focus but I got a bird's behind so it looks like it's possible

Overall, 20 minutes lying on the grass well spent

Thanks for sharing this with us. I enjoyed reading it (just as I also enjoy taking pictures of birds arses). Nice ducks, by the way.

Great results from this lens. I have never seen one of these, only heard of it, but this portrait is so good it makes me re-evaluate everything I have heard about mirror lenses.

Noel, beautiful photos (I like the red capped robin a lot and wonder how you are going to get a better one?).
For the windmill shot, does your crop allow you to zoom out a bit? My view of the photo is that the sense of the photo is the grandeur of mountains ( and their colour) rather than the windmill, so to zoom out to the top of the mountains may be better???? Just my opinion but you have a magnificent scene opportunity. I am sure that in reality it is gobsmackingly breathtaking. Enjoy your trip. Geoff

Thanks Geoff..... I took quite a few images to play with at some stage (only a slow notebook with me on the trip).... tried some pixle shift ones as well.... all some 15 minutes after sunset

a pixle shift... iso 1,000, f11, o.5s....

Hoping for some nice clouds over the next few days.

With respect to the Robyn.... they are in a lovely, semi remote spot.... so I'm going to take a chair, tripod, some beer and sit there for a while with more megapixels on the branch.... all very zen anyhow.... i'm using a bird calling app on my phone to try to bring them in.

Thank you for your kind words. I have learned to love this lens.....as soon as I stopped using it for long distance shots like the moon and things far away. It is one of my favorites now! The bokeh can work against me, but Iím learning what to avoid, and getting more interesting shots. The color rendition is fabulous and very little is needed in post production.

Keep up the good work. I hope I can catch some more of your work with this lens.
