I find owls especially hard to locate - especially a Boreal in with such a great pose and background (I heard one at night in Newfoundland years ago!). Well done!

Cormoran à aigrettes / Double-Crested Cormorant [Phalacrocorax auritus]
2021.02.21
Saint-Georges-de-Clarenceville, Quebec

Viewed from a distance, I thought it was a dark plastic bag hanging at the top of a tree.
Well, no it isn't! This is a Double-Crested Cormorant the neck stuck between 2 branches, hanging 10 meters above the creek.

WTH is it doing there?
Was it left there by a bird of prey?
An accident of nature?

It's more strange due to the fact this should have happened during the winter, where cormorants are normally down in the south in our latitudes...
Anyways, never seen that before, and nobody seems to understand this unusual situation.

Weevil - I checked our Ontario bird reports and there are 3 Double-crested Cormorant reports around the west end of lake Ontario at the moment - so they don't all disappear! If that was an Ontario shot I would have put it down to our Government's announcement of a cormorant hunting season this year - there's no science behind it as far as I know but the anglers and hunters are all in favour.

I see you are making very good use of the 500mm.

The owl shot is definitely more attractive. Wish it would show up our way some time.

There is really not much open water for the cormorant to survive up our way. The St. Lawrence is now frozen solid.

I was able to take these without leaving my house--both hand-held with the Olympus EM-1 mark II + m.z 300/4 + MC20 TC.
