Well, nothing wrong with that combo - top-notch image! Excellent clarity and detail - and it would seem you have the bird's full attention. Would never have picked this for an image where a TC was used.
The 1.7 af adaptor [ not sure if TC is the correct way to describe this ] almost never leaves the 400 these days, I also have the 1.4XL and the 2.0XL but seldom use them. The manual focus on the 400, while smooth and precise, takes forever by hand! Close up or far away, birds move way to much to be cranking the focus back and forth to get many shots. The limited auto focus of this adaptor is a wonder to behold if one has never used it. My SMC 50 f1.7 is almost a true autofocus lens with this, my other usage for the 1.7. And yes when doing close-ups with the tripod queen 400 birds do know I am there, and they do keep an eye on me... This test of the K-3III was important for me, as Canon and Nikon AF 400 lenses are very sharp but no better than what I can get now...

Those images really are breathtaking. So nice and sharp, and you can see every strand of feather. The FA* 600mm really is a beast of a lens, not just in terms of weight

I went on a stroll today, the weather was very sunny, and my K10D was yearning for a bit of action
I mostly used the Takumar 135mm F/3.5 and 55mm F/1.8 (such lovely colour rendering!), but also took a break close to the water for birdhunting.

A pair of doves landed on a branch close by, and I thought they were very cute grooming and "kissing" each other. I believe I chose to focus manually due to the twigs in the foreground distracting my autofocus, so many shots were out of focus, but this one hit home.
Taken with Sigma 70-300mm at 300mm, F/5.6, 1/1500, ISO 400

And I got some very happy news: I won an auction on a K-3 ii on eBay for a surprisingly low amount, considering the last finished auctions of said camera here in Germany.
It must be a sign - next week is my Birthday, and it is set to arrive just on that very same day, a gift from myself to myself, and I'm extremely happy about the good fortune.

Watchful parents

Spotted a tree with a hole, and first one, then the other downy woodpecker would come to feed the chicks. Never saw the chicks, but got the parents together, both looking at their hole
