Nice capture Dave.

I think it is a Cooper's Hawk as well.

Thanks Stan & Tom! On closer look, I'm really not sure it's the same bird--perhaps siblings.

Lovely action sequence Little Drawe.

Excellent shot of the hawk Dave - chest doesn't look blown out to me !

Lowell - I'm sorry I hadn't got around to commenting on your excellent post (which I digested in full) on DoF.

A Very Cooperative Hummingbird

He was close enough that I had to go downstairs to get a longer (36mm) extension tube for the 1000mm Black Dragon & he was nice enough to stay put 'til I got back.

I was able to take care of the PF without any serious impact on the iridescence (as far as I could tell) but decided not to even attempt any pp fix for the green fringe on the background branch.

Red Shafted Flicker. iso 320 f8 1/60. Using a tripod.

For the series. I was set up to try for the Kestrels, but she showed up and stole the show.

Hmmm... that action sequence with the Mama Hawk being harassed is so underexposed (or just lacking contrast?) that I can barely tell what's going on in the shots. Seems like the last shot with the baby is the only one exposed for the birds, so it must not be your monitor. Any way in the software you use to "recenter" your brightness/contrast to the subjects? Just a suggestion...

Derekkite,

One of the best Flicker shots I've ever seen.

Just another 10 days before I get to see them in the feathers again
Thanks Frogfish.
10 days? Where are you going?

I wasn't sure anyone picked up on the explanation, as it went a few pages without comment, but glad you liked the response. The whole DOF issue is a complete mess at present only because almost all the calculators assume you print 8"x10" from a full frame. It makes me laugh, as I type this looking at my 22 inch monitor (13" x 19") as to how far off the mark a depth of field calculation can get, let alone the issue with respect to a tight crop on the subject.

I need to get me some better birds.
Thanks Lowell for the explanation, actually I didn't really understand the dof calculation, I just move on and continue to post birdie pics here.
If you want better birds, go Thailand, just the Kaeng Krachan National Park already got 900+ species of birds.

That bird looks like a female Grey Chinned Minivet.
You have a series of great captures.

Sanya.

That NP sounds amazing ! We often go to Thailand (family hols in Phuket) so I'll have to look that up and see if it's an area what would suit us all !

Nice! I hope to meet a lazy hummingbird someday.

Are you planning to do any bird photography there--like up in the hills? I wish I'd been able to do that when we were there last year (but then I didn't have a real bird lens with me--only the Sigma 100-300/4.)

Yes, that NP is amazing, here are some of my captures from that park.
I'll be going again next month.
