Tried my new Tamron 65B yesterday in a park, and I'm really blown away by the image quality even with the 1.4x TC.
I arrived at a fortunate time, there were lots of geese enjoying the afternoon sun before going for a swim.
My keeper rate was surprisingly high for a manual focus lens.
Catching a bird mid-flight still will require more practise, and a tripod, if possible
this one was circling over the pond, probably searching for fish, and came down to dive into the water twice while I was watching, sadly I haven't managed to pre-focus onto the right spot at the right time.
And I'm very happy with the hand-holdability of the lens. Sure, it's huge and heavy (2kg and a bit over 30cm for the lens alone, add to that the camera body), but I can hold the forward portion and operate the focus ring at the same time with my left hand while keeping the body and trigger in my right. It's tiring my hands and arms after a few minutes, but that should get better with practise as well. If I get my 3D printer running again, I could print a Tamron-style palm rest for the 1/4 screw mount.
Getting a "proper" Adaptall 2 adapter with aperture stop-down control would also be nice in the future, but using a cheap one without also wasn't all that bad.
One thing I still need to get over is the general social anxiety when handling such a monster in public
good thing I'm not doing any street photography.
