Took out my longest lenses today, and had a go at the sparrows and doves from the windowsill
Maybe someone will appreciate the comparison between old and even older glass:
Tamron 65B 400mm F/4 with 1.4 TC (560mm effective), set to F/8
Novoflex Noflexar 400mm F/5.6 on PIGRIFF-B, set to F/8
Noflexar 600mm F/8 on PIGRIFF-B, set to F/11
Noflexar 600mm F/8 on PIGRIFF-B, set to F/11
Tamron 65B 400mm F/4 with 1.4 TC (560mm effective), set to F/8
All shot on Pentax K-3 ii (making for 600mm, 840mm and 900mm effective focal length) handheld at 400 ISO on a bright but overcast day.
I'm very happy with both (or rather, all three) lenses, the old Noflexar holds up admirably well I find, and I actually prefer its colour rendering in the second-last to that of the Tamron in the last.
Both my 400mm and 600mm Noflexars are of the inferior doublet design, but still are nicely sharp when focussed, and didn't seem to show more CA's than the Tamron.
When using the Noflexar 400mm, I also found it more comfortable to hand-hold, and a bit easier and faster to focus.
No wonder since that's exactly what the PIGRIFF grip was designed for. That being said, both had a very good keeper rate.
If you fancy something odd and special, and plan to take pictures somewhere where people won't call the cops when someone's walking around with a very much gun-looking device, I can recommend the old Novoflex photosniper system.
I thought about selling my Noflexar set since I'm short on money and looking for a good medium format film camera right now....but no way, I'm keeping this one!
