Good mirror pics.

That's a juvenile gull, they carry on trying to cadge off mum and dad...

Thank you 🙂
Though this was the most challenging lens for me so far, thin depth of field and very dim viewfinder make for a difficult combination, I'll probably have to get used to using Live View with this one.

If if was a juvenile gull, it was a giant - as large as the adult seagulls, and a fair bit more massive by the looks of it.

Still testing the waters with that 100-500mm. The weather's been decidedly uncooperative as far as having decent light for such a lens, meaning I have to crank my ISO and swing the post processing bat a bit harder than I'd normally like to.

That said, this was handheld, f/11 if I remember right, and 'only' 1/400 at ISO6400, so I can't gripe too much for what its giving me.

I do get some mild CA, but that was kind of expected. The lens absolutely shines for 'close' photography though, which while it wasn't why I bought it definitely makes it worth keeping.

Found a Rubinar 500/8 Russian mirror lens at the bargain price of 20€, complete with case, hood and two filters at a flea market this sunday and tried it out today.
Very nice sharpness if you get the focus right, and no CA's whatsoever.

Today (Monday) I picked up a Tamron 500/8 from the post office, by chance I got my first two mirror lenses only a day apart. Will probably sell on the Rubinar since the Tamron's contrast is better and it has 1:3 vs. 1:4 Macro capability.

Someone left a bag of chips close to the water. The speckled one made noises at the seagulls and crows, but they didn't seem too impressed
Wow, the bokeh those lenses produce is quite dazzling but you do get some nice images. Well done, especially with the dim viewfinder and ultra thin DOF.

That is toooooo much!!! What a moment to capture - good work for spotting and acting on it!

Hope neither bird is sick or injured?

Only injured if the other one flies off.

Rubinar should be good. That price is a steal. I have the 1000/10 and it is good, if challenging to use.
Made at Leningrad 3 Optical Factory, with the design done for KGB. Then into private hands in the chaos of the early 90s.

Do the filters feel a bit like plumbing fittings? It could be useful to getting rubber strap wrenches to part them if they jam together.

More mucking about with the Cosina. The realization the issues I'm having is user error and not the lens is kind of humbling. When I get it right though, it just makes me want more. All three of these were taken at the 500mm end.

They feel okay, a bit rough, but so far I haven't had trouble separating them. I thought about applying a bit of Ballistol to the thread, that usually improves things.

I'm thinking about selling the Rubinar and keeping the Tamron, not because there's anything wrong with it, but because the contrast of the Tamron is just a tiny bit better - and I already have the adapter and 1.4x TC for the Tamron 😄
