K-3 and DA 55-300 with the HD DA 1.4 TC

Bright sun, lots of birds -22ºC. Lots of hungry critters.
Love the squirrel, Norm. …and the birds.
-22c is colder than I have ever experienced.
How low can it go and the birds survive?

So far yes. I'm still waiting for a clean non windy night to take it for a spin.
Excellent, I'm hoping to able to take my full spectrum converted K-5 out this Saturday. I'm looking forward to what you'll do with that K3iii and it's power noise levels.

Is there a "jumping bird " theme today? I have one taken recently.

Brought to you by the wonders of burst mode, and fast shutter speeds.

I wasn't going to post it but how can I resist?

The dove I don't know, we've never had one try to winter with us before. The others, chickadees, nuthatches, Jays, Grosbeaks, woodpeckers etc. are year rounders here, and the temperatures get as low as -40ºC. They fluff up thier feathers, and it looks as comfy as down coats.

I got to the nearby wildlife protection area early Christmas Eve morning, and the sun was just rising. This tiny Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, barely bigger than a hummingbird and fluffed up in the morning chill, lit in a bare tree just a few feet above my head, giving my camera time to focus the DA* 300mm. These little birds normally move almost constantly, flitting from limb to limb picking small insects off the underside of leaves.

The first one is obviously not a telephoto shot but tells you something about the people who run our parks. The bridge can be congested in summer but in the winter, when it's probably the best spot in the City for watching and photographing winter duck close up, it is very quiet. No stopping? No birdwatching? No photography? - OK you could limit tripods I suppose. Mind you there was nobody around to enforce the rule either!

The Snowy Owl was on the walk back. Not quite as pristine white as Weevil's male, but still great to see. A few photographers and birders were keeping a respectful distance, but then there's always the doofus who has to walk straight up to it with his smart phone at arm's length, then off it goes!

Birding in the City does have its downsides! Happy New Year everone.

K-3 III, DA*300mm, 1.4xTC
