Thanks. I've found that the combo (i.e., the DA* 300 + DA 1.4x converter) is best within 10 to 30 feet and then it helps to limit cropping to no more than 50%. Using fill flash to keep ISO down also helps.

Spent the last week up in the Gawler Ranges in South Australia.

Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby (K3III and DFA 150-450)

and then one can play chasing the budgies! These guys are super fast through the gulleys.... twisting and turning..... the K3III (focus tracking) had potential but I didn't put much effort in.
