I also agree with the fill flash, sometimes, I shot a lot using fill flash with my *istD, but have gotten away from it lately, or should I say with later bodies. Part of this was due to Pentax discontinuing support for TTL flash. Combined with their lack of an AF teleconverter for a very long time. PTTL is very difficult to deal with when a TC that does not report true aperture is used
That's very interesting to know. I'm not currently using a pTTL flash but have considered it as a future option. Perhaps I'm better off remaining with manual and autoflash.

That's of course very true but I suspect it's more than that — that the DA* 300 and 1.4x TC are actually optimized for shorter than longer distances. I have an Olympus 100-400 and that lens is definitely sharper at longer distances than the Pentax combination, while there are about equal at shorter distances.

I have also found that the K300/4 is much better at short distances than long. This is sometimes a little frustrating when birding because you might want a record shot of something out quite far,

I find the DFA 150-450 quite good over the whole focus distance range, even wide open

Assorted birds photographed during a trip to NewZealand in 2010. I was using a K20D which does not include the specific lens used in the EXIF data, but it must have been a 55~300mm, the original version.
BTW: All but the little green fellow at the bottom were wild

So many wonderful images here.

Short-beaked Echidna. These are monotremes (egg-laying mammals), like platypus. The hind feet face backwards to help them dig in when they feel threatened. Very effective, but it does produce a very distinctive gait. Very exciting to get such a clear shot. KP + DA 55-300 PLM at 300mm
