If any one is interested I've just posted a comparison between the 500/4.5 (with & without x1.4 TC) and the Sigma 120-300/2.8 (with and without x1.4 and 2.0 TCs) here :

TESTS : Sigma 500 & Sigma 120-300 with Kenko + Nikon + Sigma TCs - FM Forums

One thing is for sure, the Sigma 120-300 focus breathes and is nowhere near 600mm (or even 500mm) with the x2.0 TC !!

Very nice. I was driving along the Slocan river today on the way to a job and noticed an osprey in a tree on the opposite side. I stopped and this happened right in front of me. The fish got away.

I love the sequence, and really love the first shot. Seeing how they dive is really interesting

Joined the 300mm plus club....

Hello all,
A few months ago I accidentally stumbled across a used copy of the Sigma 500/4.5.
Short background summary: I switched to Pentax when I lost faith in the course that Olympus was going a little over a year ago. I was invested in some of the zuiko SHG lenses, but could not warm up to the Olympus E5. Just before the OM-D came out, I decided I had to search elsewhere. Regarding birding, during my Olympus days, I had settled on the zuiko 150/2 (note: 300mm FF eq. due to 2x crop factor), coupled with the 2xTC. 600mm FF eq., and I was looking for a future second hand ZD300/2.8 purchase.
I wasn't happy though: the panasonic sensor was severely limiting in color depth, DR and noise.
So one day I found myself in a camera store holding the K5, later got the K5IIs, and the Sigma 500/4.5. Spent some time roaming the internet to find a (new) copy of the apparently discontinued (for Pentax) Sigma 1.4tc, and since have been exploring this combo, shooting handheld.
Here's one from last week, with the sigma 500 on the 1.4tc, just a humble great tit...

Chris

I know that now, but not when the Sigma first caught my eye when I was browsing the "used" section of a camera store to see how much my zuiko 150/2 would fetch.
I dreamt about the lens that night (seriously!) and bought it the next day. And to think that the camera store actually mis-listed the lens in the Olympus zuiko section!! I would never have spotted it otherwise....
Luckily I'm not a superstitious person
One of the main reasons for switching to Pentax, was the planned DA560mm, assuming it was destined to be an affordable alternative to the Nikon/Canon super-teles....
I was scratching my head for a few months after the price was revealed.

Wonderful photos as usual

It's been nearly a week since it snowed here, well it will be on Sunday but the birds are coming back and the days are getting longer thankfully
I have kind of a mixed bag taken over the last few days

Not a great photo but I liked it - killdeer at high speed

The elk are down from the high country for the spring

Ruffed Grouse - he thought I couldn't see him

Albert if you are there the osprey are back a Beauvais!

We have a flock of Merriam turkeys that hang around my back yard all winter - might have something to do with the corn I give them - the toms put on quite a display in the spring
Hope you enjoy Robert
