Yeah and before I got into photography, I thought, "A sparrow is a sparrow." I didn't realize there were so many varieties around here.

Nice eagle shots, and I always like sparrow shots. They are common, but photogenic.

Sparrows are common but the trick is to make them stand out in the picture.

Eagles at Conowingo are iffy. Some days there are hundreds and many flying close by but not yesterday. Yesterday there were fewer, maybe 15 plus juveniles, and they stayed far off. But I did manage to get a couple of OK shots with the Sigma 150-500
cool shots...been wanting to check that place out since i am in richmond

Nice work, Bob! I've got to get up there soon. I got out to one of my favorite spots yesterday with the Sigma 500/4.5 & K-5IIs but birds were scarce and the light got iffy on me. This ain't great technically (ISO 2000) but I like it. I'm not sure about the ID--my best guess is Savannah Sparrow.
i like it dave...love the flow of the shot!!!

the DA 300 can do all kinds of things and with the K3 so might be the combo effect

There are people there from all over the East Coast - maybe some even further. On weekends during November I would guess a 100 to 200 people. The setups some people have are amazing for amateur photographers. Last year the guy next to me had two of the most capable Nikon Full Frames along with their 600 lens on one and a 300 or 400 on another for when the eagles came close. I would guess he had $50,000 in camera ger including all the ultimate RSS setups. During the week it is less crowded.
This is a good site for information A Visitor’s Guide to the Bald Eagles at Conowingo Dam
I check the weather before going and also call the phone listed on the site for dam releases. The eagles, superb hunters that they are, prefer to get fish stunned by going through the dam and floating. The power company sounds alarms prior to a release ad that wakes up the eagles.
The lighting is terrific, especially in the morning. I get there before sunrise and usually leave in the early PM.
If you plan to go - let me know, I'd like to try out your Sigma 500 on my camera. The K-3 caused enough spousal comments that it will be awhile before I bring up the 500

K-3 paired with Sigma 500/4.5 is amazing! At my lunch break I went home to try it (K-3 arrived yesterday). From my backyard I shot a bluebird at 100-105ft. away, cropped it almost 100% and still was able to see some single hairs and feather details. I would suggest to start working thoroughlly on spousal approval. You know...

Christmas 2015 or a used one immediately if one becomes available. With the used one I'll just have to ask for forgiveness when it arrives!

Cross posted from the K-3 photos thread.

I've been moving tree branches around on my porch to try and get some more natural poses near the feeders… not there yet, but better.
