Finally

Those are very nice Frogfish

I finally got a Red-winged Blackbird in flight. I couldn't do it with the K-5.

Always bump up the exposure for darker birds like this before you take the photo. The k-3 is a good camera. It is a bit noisy with shadows and birds that have dark parts. If I fill up the frame with a dark bird then I don't have a problem with noise in these areas. Bumping up the exposure to the positive side does help some.

@frogfish: nice birds and beautiful shots. But if the exifs are correct they are all made with your Nikon D3s, is that right?

That is a great capture and thank you for the tip about dark birds .. but first I have to find the bird and fill the frame - 99% of the challenge for me! I don't have the skill with a long lens to do that yet.

Nicely done with the red winged blackbird. You nailed the focus, exposure and composition.

Traderdrew: I wanted to add a bit to my quick comment. We see outstanding work here, and I know the effort that goes into getting close, the hours and persistence involved, as well as the ability to get the shot when it appears. Not to diminish what anyone shows in any way, but that is one of the most technically excellent shots I've seen. To catch this bird in flight, the speeds it flies, with exposure and focus right on, and to capture the stunning presentation. Great shot.

Derek, that is well said. I support your analysis 100%. Any red wings I have caught in flight have been little blobs way out there somewhere.

Ken, lovely Black-headed Munia.

Frogfish, your White Rumped Munia set is beautiful.

Andrew, I second all the positive comments. Your Red-winged Blackbird in flight is unbelievable! Congratulations.

Thanks Everyone! I just wanted to clarify something. I didn't fill the frame. I cropped most of the photo off. The K-3 coupled with the Sigma 500mm F/4.5 has nice cropping power. Dropping the AA filter gives the shots better details.

I used Topaz Desoise to get rid of some of the noise and I did that by turning the shadows slider to one side for more aggressive noise reduction in darker areas.

I filled the frame with a Hooded Merganser a couple of weeks ago and the dark areas of that bird had great details on (both the light and dark areas) and no noise.

I met the man who designed Lens Align out there at the Viera Wetlands where have been spending some time lately. I almost reacted to him like he was a celebrity. I recommend Lens Align but it takes time to align a 500mm lens. He was trying to give me tips on how to cut that time down.

A different kind of bird, taken from the roof of our terminal building. Cold and very windy. 55-300 WR @300mm.
