I also have thought a lot about the Sigma 300mm 2.8 with a 1.4x TC as a great birding lens but Sigma has not produced the 1.4 TC in K mount in at least a year and a half and no longer is available new in stores. I "believe" that they are no longer producing the 2x TC either in K mount but you can still find them in stores. That being the case, my question is whether the new Pentax 1.4TC will communicate fully with the Sigma lens. If it does then the 300mm, 2.8 is a great option especially since its currently on sale!

Northern Saw-whet Owl

I caught this Northern Saw-whet Owl basking in a little window of sun breaking into an opening in a spruce tree on a very cold but sunny morning, about -16 degrees Centigrade. K3 and DA*300.

I bought a sigma 170-500mm APO DG with no tripod ring at KEH so that I can get closer to smaller birds. I don't think I'll get a better 300mm+ for the price i got it for. I've already gotten several keepers.
Great photos.

What a great shot! The out of focus branches in the foreground really give the image nice depth. Love the eyes being mostly closed - just enough to peek at you!

These shots were taken from a car using a Kirk window mount, Still haven't taken the plunge and got a K-3, but I am considering it.

Ah, the trials of a wanna-be wildlife photographer. Even cheating doesn't work.

Earlier today, under 100% overcast skies with the K-30 and 55-300 WR:

All afternoon, since the clouds broke and the sun bathed the landscape:

I can even hear the birds singing all around the house. Sigh.

Here's another from my morning outing at Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge. The nest location meant a two mile walk through the snow and ice. The two miles were a lot easier finding the nest with no snow and ice. I waited on the edge of a marsh for this guy/gal to land.

Thanks Stan. The Owl was indeed deep into the tree. I must admit, I hung around in the freezing cold hoping it would open it's eyes a little more, but that was the best I could get before I left due to hypothermia!
