From this morning, quick edit but I might work on this some more.
Stunning photo, Travis. Can you explain what we are seeing here? Is it extended breeding plumage?

What a great shot, Frank! Four different waders in the same place. Eastern reef egret, great egret, white faced heron, and a partially obscured royal spoonbill. How lucky are you?

Nice set ,which TC are you using with the FA
The new Pentax 1,4 TC; it works fine with all long FA* lenses; autofocus is fast and accurate with FA*300 f2.8 et FA*600 f4

Resolving power of the Pentax F 300mm f4.5

I conducted a quick test this afternoon using my 300mm to examine its performance on my recently acquired K5.

I mounted the lens on a tripod then attached the camera and then set up a target. I took 4 photos in quick succession using a 2sec timer shutter release to minimise shake. The first photo was at ISO 80 followed by 100, 200 and 400. I then added a Kenko 1.5X teleconverter (DG variant not the SHQ). I repeated the experiment as above.

The first image is a crop of the photograph taken at ISO 80 with no teleconverter. The second is a crop of the photograph taken with the teleconverter also at ISO 80.

When I first looked at the no teleconverter image I was not overly impressed. I expected greater sharpness from the lens (perhaps I was expecting too much - opinions please).

Then I looked at the shots taken with the teleconverter. I expected a loss of IQ but to my surprise I think the opposite has happened (I pixel peeked in photoshop and there was clear differences in IQ).

Is it possible that the Pentax F 300mm has out resolved the K5 sensor. My evidence is greater IQ with optics driven magnification via the teleconverter.

I welcome thoughts here

Wild mark: I would say first up that the light is poor and your shutter speeds are slow. Need better lighting conditions to test the resolution and ensure vibrations are minimised. Better as well to up the ASA to get eg 1/500th or more.

Second up the exposure needs to be consistent between the two pics. Clear difference, both look underexposed in fact but the first by perhaps a whole stop.
Third up, since the crops are the same size, need to know which is enlarged or which is reduced in size. There are two ways to go actually, playing with tc's. Take the pics at the same distance, enlarge the sans-tc pic to match the tc pic and compare the 100% pics side by side. As I say on one of my reviews:
Kiron Matchmate MC 2x Lens Reviews - Miscellaneous Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

"To TC or not to TC, that is the question?? A question I try to apply to a couple of Kiron Matchmates, 2x and 1.5x, and a Tokina RMC x2 doubler.

One point of view is that the goalposts have moved since vintage TC's like these were made. Back then they were competing with an enlarger, these days the benchmark is the quality obtained from resizing the image by resampling on the PC. Enlarging is the equivalent of clicking the zoom-in icon. Resampling uses mathematical algorithms to create new closely matching pixels to make the image larger. If the TC doesn't make that cut (of at least matching the IQ of a resampled image) there isn't really much point to it. .."

or alternatively it can also be a good test retreating back with the tc so that the image is the same size and seeing how close in IQ the image is.

PS in that review I link to check out the link to Bob Atkins on tc's and his tests.

fab day at the RSPB

The sun shone, a fine breeze wafted along the estuary, and a fine variety of avain wildlife sported in the sunshine. Tide was in which I think brings birds in from the tidal flats.

I took along double kit: my K-r with 400m Nestar, and recently acquired Lumix G2 with adaptamatic 300mm (so same field of view). I'll post some comparitive pics for you to see what you think... in the mean time i was pleased with this one of a grey heron in flight with the K-r. Not bad for MF, and a $50 dollar lens.... well hey even a hacker like me gets lucky occasionally full size crop below.

Thanks, Norm! It's crepe myrtle--one of the last shrubs to show leaves.
