Remember we are talking about the lowly despised super zoom here.
I'm totally with you on that point--in capable hands, those lenses can produce superb results.

Excellent, FYI Tess says you spend all day walking around in the forest looking for places to photograph these guys.

Thanks Norm Tess is right. I've found quite a few Woodpecker nests this year. The chicks make a noise like a squeaky toy .

Personally, I think that as long as you take the photo with a 300+ mm lens, post it. We are pleased on this friendly forum to give advice that might help you improve your shooting. Very, Very few make nasty remarks and the moderators take care of them pretty quickly. Adam has created a forum that is helpful, friendly and sometimes funny.

The only other forum I am subscribed to that matches PF for helpful and friendly is RBTI-L which only has a 1,000 odd subscribers and is for those working as I do/did with a sophisticated DBMS. The owner of RBTI does not tolerate any abuse, just like Adam.

X2, as are all the pictures in this thread.

I think he is saying that he is\was a DBA..... sorry couldn't resist. Information Technology has its own language and is based on acronyms that eventually become words of their own. And I agree Adam does an outstanding job with this board, a good mod either makes or breaks a BBS and Adam has put together and maintains one of the best I have ever seen.

Unfortunately, it is work, Dave. R:Base Technologies Inc. They own and support a DataBase Management System (DBMS) that I have used to develop corporate information systems since 1984.

Moderators: I know it's off topic, but Dave did ask

It's true--I did. My work life involved managing databases but I went obsolete and retired when the DBMSs took over. ;~)

Yep. I'm of the opinion that most any modern lens' from the kit on up can get the job done if in "capable hands" which, of course, is a huge qualification.

Anyway here's one that clearly qualifies for the 300mm plus club:
Taken with the 1000mm achromatic two element astro scope at about a distance of 60 feet.
An odd use of a 1000mm glass but it was just a test shot that turned out well.
Being a achromat it did take a bit of PP in ACR to get it right though. CA can be a real problem with it if you are not careful.
Cropped.
