Family Gull update

Tootled round to check up on the chicks. Yep they're big now, only a few bits of downy fluff sticking to their juvenile plumage. Every so often they practice stretching out their wings, and flap a bit. Last year I saw them at a similar stage, then a few days later....gone! Guess there isn't much of a learning phase, a case of "hey you're a gull, thats what you do. Fly!" I'm going to keep an eye on them, see if I can catch an interesting moment or two.
With my tamron 55BB (slightly fungus afflicted, but otherwise no iq problems like I had with my first one see here). Crop, modest resize to xga.

I continue to be in awe of the skills displayed in this thread. Today was my last day of a month using the HD DA 1.4x Rear Converter with all sorts of lenses. I went out with the DA*300 and found a very accommodating rainbow lorikeet. The sky is toally whited out due to the grey wintery weather, but the results impressed me. All hand held and moderately cropped. There are several others in my flickr collection.
Gorgeous!

Can you ID the bird in the first photo--it's a juvenile(?)
Sorry for the late reply. The bird is a European green woodpecker.

300 focus-lock issue

My brand new 300 quite often won’t lock focus even on a sunny, bright day like today. The motor moves OK to what looks like a good focus in the viewfinder but It then clicks a few times, won’t beep to confirm focus, there’s no octagon in the viewfinder and so the shutter won’t release. It therefore leads to missing shots - most frustrating.

Anybody else observed this?

For info it's on a K-30 with latest firmware and the subjects have all been well beyond the min focus distance. Handheld mostly by the way.

Not I. My DA*300 is a very reliable, if not super quick, locker-on.

What 300 lens are you talking about? If you are talking about the DA*300, I will only see that kind of behavior in low light and when trying to focus on a very busy area like shooting a small bird in a jamble of branches. Then that is what the quick-shift focusing is for.

I'm not sure about the K-30, but the K-5 series has an option in the menu that you can release the shutter even if you don't get focus confirmation.

To be clear - its a DA*300mm. Its not a bird in a jumble of branches either - I'm talking swans against grass on a sunny day when it was not locking on about 25-30% of the time. I'll give the store a call - I'm thinking a replacement may be in order.

I'd look at a replacement. Mine was like that on the K-5, eventually it failed and has been very nice since.
