Thanks Marcus, I normally catch them at the end of the season when they are missing bits of wing and suchlike but for once it looks like I got a perfect specimen.

Even though I have the 300mm and 1.4x, Sigma 100-300mm and FA 250-600mm I find I am nearly always picking up the 50-500mm OS these days, it's such a versatile lens for everything from closeup to far distance shots.

Still seeking the Least Bittern. Thought I had it, but it was an immature Green Heron.

Not seeing much these days, but here are the last two things I've been able to get on the SD card. Seems like the birds that I do see are getting smaller too...

We are seeing fires this week, and four of these planes were scooping up water from the lake and dropping it on a fire.

Never realized that they could use the pontoons to pick up water for fire fighting ,we only seem to have helicopters here that do that in my area , great idea

What was amazing was seeing a Martin Mars Bomber scooping up water for fire fighting. The last one retired last year. Huge four engine monsters. We used to have several of them here in British Columbia. Unfortunately it is fire season right now, and we have a number of evacuation orders in British Columbia, Yukon and Alberta.

It seems they use the same airframe without pontoons to drop retardant. I saw the same aircraft take off from a local airport (Castlegar BC) without pontoons. These guys were doing circuits, four of them. They would pick up water, fly up the lake to gain altitude, turn around to the drop point, fly down the valley to the lake, refill and repeat. Quite the show.

I borrowed a inflatable pontoon boat today trying to get a different POV. It was very windy and definitely a challenge to focus on the only two birds I saw.

Found the Least Bittern today, but couldn't get a pic. (Would have been a panning shot through the windshield...)

Did get an American Bittern

And a Virginia Rail

Lots of Common Gallinule with fuzzy chicks
