That's the most RIGHT ON statement I've ever heard! I've always thought that. One of the very first things they taught me, back in 1964, when I was attending the US Navy Photographer's Mate "A" School in Pensacola, Florida was, "If it takes 100 shots to bring back that ONE photograph we sent you to capture, DO IT! Film is your cheapest commodity!" In this day of digital photography, that's even more relevant.

Very nice captures, all three.... but the last one is stunning! The contrast of the snow-white egret against the dark background is superb! And, the sharp focus is amazing. You guys and your DA*300s are making me very envious! VERY! No.... I think JEALOUS is more like it!

Your "A" school memory brought out a few from my halcyon days of Commissary "A" school; if you throw a 1 lb. block of butter at someone make sure it just came out of the reefer so it gets someone's attention, there's a reason that Hurricane hunters flying Constellations get a 55 lb. case of rib eyes for their galley, our Photographer's Mate's mantra circa 1971, "They don't call it Can(n)on for nothing,
and "Of course you're going to Patternmaker's "A" school, it's your first choice."

Thanks for memories Dewman!

Yikes! No wonder! I have no experience with the 300mm lens in question, sadly enough, but yes, I know all about that elusive DOF and the difficulties of getting it "just right."

Most of the time I carry a few primes as my walkaround kit, longest is normally the 77 then a gap to my F*300 4.5. Anyway, the point of this post is to get across how relatively easy it is to use a 300mm lens day to day for quick hand held shots on the K3/5 etc.....even down to silly shutter speeds.....say less then 1/100 and more hand held.

As an example, I'm on holiday in Thailand at the moment and I visited the Soi dog rescue home yesterday in Phuket ....lots of great work being done by quite a multi cultural group of volunteers........ see https://www.soidog.org/Default.aspx

A quick snap of a dog there.....with the 300

The dog looks as if it had been through a fire. And all it wants is some love and a bit of food. Dogs are so easy to care for and hard not to love. Except those yappy little things with owners that think the yapping is "cute" = NOT.

Great capture, Gary. Perfect timing to show the actual wing length when extended. Owls are very cool birds and mean as hell, in spite of their "cute" faces!

I've always been very interested in model rocketry, although I've never actually been involved in it. I find pyrotechnics in general to be quite interesting. Things that burn or go boom!

Go to National Association of Rocketry and search for a club, take your photo gear and have fun, you may end up hooked!
