Something different: K-5 II, smc Pentax-FA 645 5,6/400mm ED (IF), probably at f/8. If you get the focus right, this is a helluva lens - and amazingly lightweight for what it is.

White eyed Vireo. We don't see these, this is from what I understand the first sighting in British Columbia. A group saw it on Dec 1.

I was wondering how much you guys and gal crop?
Looking threw most of my bird photos, an average crop is 4-8MP on a 24MP sensor.

As much as possible. I suspect most of mine are similar. Even a large bird like an eagle and 500-600 mm lens you need to be quite close to fill the frame. Higher resolution, no AA filter, and sharp lenses make it possible to crop.

This afternoon, was pretty dark, overcast, at around 3:15 PM, snowy... I saw this guy by the highway, just after a road construction zone, sitting on a branch. I passed by, and took the first exit. Got my K-3 + DA*300+HDTC ready with manual presets (1/800, ISO1600, f5.6), and went back to the spot...
I stopped on sideway (pretty dangerous I'd have to admit), and opened my roof top, used Live view to focus and took 3 shots... that was the best results I could get

These guys are very skittish, so this is the best one I have so far !

Do you see them in the summer in your area? Oddly, other than being in the right place at the right time, it was rather sedate compared to the kinglets that I have yet to capture satisfactorily.

I crop enough that if I want a 16x20 I have to use Perfect Resize...

I often crop to less than 3MP.

I haven't--that I know of. I only became aware of vireos last year and they seem to be fall birds--in my yard at least.

I know the impulse to get the shot even though shooting (and other) conditions are terrible--but why do we do that? I haven't seen nearly as many hawks this year as in the past--road-side or anywhere.

Just a little bit out its normal range

White-eyed Vireos breed in Maryland, but not much farther north than that.

Yesterday I was taking shots with DA*300/f4 with 1.7 TC on K5 and one observation made me to post this to confirm. I was having 11 AF point setting for focus and it was changed to center point focus after attaching TC. Is it true that only center point focus works for all TCs attached to prime lenses? or specific to DA* 300/f4 or specific to K5 or is it by design by Pentax?

I don't have a DA*300 but on my DA*60-250, if I shoot with the HD DA 1.4 I keep all my focus points, if I use the 1.7 I get centre point only.

Same here as much as possible. Although I am limited to DA* 300 and 1.4x tc so I likely crop even more.

I did catch a few of the tundra swains as they moved South a few weeks ago.

After spending the day on the ice of the river finally had a flock fly directly over head.

There is a good population of resident Bald Eagles here and more are starting to move in for winter. It will be another week or 2 before they really start coming in however. Yesterday I tried to get close to a pair but only got within 80 yards or so before they flushed.

This pair lives close to my house. They seem to have "relationship issues" from time to time....
