Those are great shots Tom. While I usually (try to) stay away from mid day/afternoon shooting, I'm starting to wonder if the extra light might help with the longer teles.

Thanks SMC,

I try to avoid high noon with the telephotos but late morning and late afternoon sometimes yield good results. Then again rules are made to be broken.

70-300 Quantary zoom

I received a Quantary 70-300 zoom today. I bought it off shopgoodwill.com so I was not at all sure it would operate. I am very happy to report that it works as expected and in the manner described in the review in the 'Lens Review' portion on the forum. I also was pleasantly surprised that it have a very tight but zoom zoom action with no creep at all. Boy it really extends a lot when one goes into Macro with it! Also the normal 300 mm zoomed setting it quite extended too. The manual focus clutch is still very tight on the lens and the Macro function works very well. It came with it's hard case and I have every reason to believe it is at least 3 years old if not more. I won this lens in an auction with another lens plus filters so the cost on this one would be $23.00 and I think I will get my money's worth out of the lens.
Today is a very dark rainy day with most vehicles having to use their headlights to give you an idea of the conditions in the photo below. Taken through the rain from my porch at ISO 400, 300 mm focal length, f5.6, 1/100 shutter from about 50 feet which is not quite infinity on the lens. I thought it was pretty good for the lighting and weather conditions and lens age.

Looks good. You can make out a rain drop on the left side of the frame.

You are right that is a big drop coming off that rather large oak there on the corner of our property. I looked at the RAW in full screen in iPhoto and the 73rd sign is covered in little raindrops. The tree bark is damp but it leans toward the camera in this image so the bark is not really wet. I guess I should have taken a really long range shot since the tress in the distance looked cool in the rain. Thanks a lot for your comments guys! Now you guys know where I live and can come after me! Yep, that is our corner, well at least I get the privilege of mowing it for the city. It's our lot but their easement to do with as they please which usually doesn't please us.

Quantaray = Sigma

I just found out in digging deep in the web that this 70-300 is really a rebadged Sigma. The performance of the Sigma version is not better but they charge more. At the really low price I paid I now hope I don't ever break anything on or in the lens. I apparently scored a real steal off shopgoodwill.com. I also recently bought a SMC-A 50 mm f1.7 for $16.00 which is in great condition. Came in a bag with a P3 and other lenses and stuff. I guess I will sell the P3 film body. I also found out that these were made for Wolf camera as well as Ritz camera(Quantaray) as well as general sales as Quantaray and as Sigma so this one lens could be a really large production item for Sigma resulting in lower prices. Also it seems to have been in production for quite awhile with several upgrades over the years. I have the newer(surprise) 58 mm filter thread instead of the older 62 or 67. I think I am going to enjoy having a AF 300 mm where almost all the stuff I want to shoot is at infinity. I am gonna have to go find that blue heron again.

Hi, Guys. First time posting here on this thread. Recently I got myself (before I ended my LBA) a M42 SMC Tak 300/4 for about $160 US. This is my very very first shot with it.

Hi Phil. That is an excellent price. There is something wonky with the focus grip, but it's superficial.

It sure would have stood out last weekend between all of the Canikons....

For some reason there are no reviews of that lens here--what's up with that?

I wanted to wait until I knew the lens a little better. There is at least one other forum member that has one.
