SQUIER, if you are listening, toss all my advice above on getting good IQ from the Album. I tried this one and it softened up and took a color cast. Back to flickr for me.

Ok, noted Lee. Have now uploaded from the site i use, but this time let them remain oversize, cos the IQ doesnt get worse when the forum downsizes, it just gets worse @ 1024 or smaller as the forum upsizes, even the 1024 pix photos. Weird

That is one for the record. Thought I had witnessed most silly things birds could do but never heard of agressive Quail.

Isn't it Mating season? Do you look anything like a Quail?

There is some blur but I was lucky to get away with what I did. I never thought to grab my tripod and use it as a monopod but that might have helped. Had I taken the time to get setup, he would have been gone. I also had the kids/wife putting their shoes on so I only had a moment.

I really need a monopod, but I'm presuming one for the A*300 and 600 would be $$? I still need to make something to balance the 600 on a tripod but perhaps it wouldn't be as much of an issue when using it on a monopod?

Steve

Hey Lee/SMC

Here's a couple more of the Downy Woopecker for the sake of comparison.

I use my M 400/5.6 on a monopod all the time. It would probably collapse under the weight of your 600mm SMC or Lee's 400/2.8. In any case it seems to work well for me.

The Downy's beak does seems to be a little shorter than the Hairy one. Could this, dare I say it, be a case of pecker evny?

It's not a duck, it's a Loon (Gaviidae). I believe the English species name is "red-throated diver"

It was handheld at f8 and 1/500. 510mm Iso 800. By hand held I mean I was flat on my belly in the mud, using my elbows as support. The trick is pretty much spray and pray, but with good breathing technique. Pretty much the same as when shooting my rifle.

Here is a BIF attempt with the same combo.

You were laughing so hard you were unable to properly type the last word in the sentence?

Just because I like seeing how inadequate my skills are compared to everyone else, I am going outside now with my da55-300 + 1.7x and see just how badly I can do. I don't care if it took 100 shots, the ones you posted look really impressive with that lens combo.
