kenogh. That photo is simply breath taking! Gorgeous bird captured beautifully!
And again !

I had a double take at that shot (well quadruple actually because it's such a beauty) as I initially though it was a Common, never heard of the Blue Eared before, must be a cousin of the Common, both gorgeous birds.

Love to see more of those Flameback Peckers as well Tom - they also look like gorgeous birds.

I'm sorry, if that bird could be mistaken for Common, then I've really got to get to Asia sometime soon!

(Joke link. Yes, I get that there's a "common" kingfisher...)

Anyone have a positive ID on this species. I have only seen it a couple times locally.

From leafing through Sibley and based on your location my guess is Rough-legged Hawk, male dark morph; you're in the winter range for this species.

Usual Suspects

Haven't posted much in this area for a while. Beautiful light this morning so I wandered down by
the local pond. Managed to catch a few of the usual suspects.

North American Robin

Red Wing Blackbird - Male

Another blue-eared kingfisher with better bokeh (but the perch is not as clean as the earlier pic).

This is the male bird, the female bird has a red beak.

Just discovered a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird building a nest in the Sweetgum tree in my yard. About 10-11 meters up so I won't be getting any closer than this, but with luck the morning light will find its way in for better lighting and a faster shutter speed. Luckily I can get a mostly unobstructed view from one of my attic windows. Used fill flash for this one.
