I wouldn't get bored either Ken.

Great capture.

Thanks guys! Yeah I'd say Coopers because that's what we seem to have around here according to my local experts. I owe the background color to good luck: he was in the dead elm which is closer to the house and I was shooting to the NW with a (live--I do have some live trees ;~) White Oak in the background.

And, yes, that's a gorgeous sunbird Ken!

I always thought : "if you're not in birding what is the use of a 300mm (or more) lens ? Dude, really ? i mean for normal people !".

That was until yesterday and today : i went to the world Championship final of world climbing (@ Paris, France), with my fellow 70-200/3.5 Vivitar, then i put an eye in the VF and thought : "Geeeeez ! i would kill for a 300mm f4 right nooooooow".
Or 500mm for portraits ? This is the lovely Old Lady that I've seen a few times when visiting her island home and this time she came out to bring me hot Chinese Tea when I was birding ... in case I felt cold (temperature has dropped with the arrival of the Northern winds, from 35C+ to a cool 25C)

this may be somewhat obvious, but with an immature coopers in your yard, somewhere nearby was a mating pair

Ah, so you don't think it's the same juvenile I photographed three years ago?

She certainly is Larry. She has nothing but still thinks of us.

Nope, just suggesting next year, assuming the parents are nearby, something more interesting to photograph.

Well I finally have a contribution to this thread.....although not as clear and crisp as I would like, I actually captured this guy kind of off-the-hip today. My wife noticed something splashing around down at the creek, so we grabbed cameras and headed down. We've never seen such a creature in our creek! He was ~100 yards away from my vantage point but I shot like crazy with the FA* 300 4.5. These are the best 2 shots out of 30 or so.

We looked him up - all we can come up with is a Double-crested Cormorant. Really neat to see for the first time!

Congrats! They are cool birds; yours is probably just passing through on the way to wintering grounds on the Gulf or SE coast.

Cormorant
Way to go, Stan--not very common in fresh water around here. But don't you think a faster 300 would have helped? ;~)

Absolutely.... - but the way our wildlife is around here, you have to grab what you have and sneak up on them. The FA* was already on the camera already so off I went with it.

I can sit down there at the creek all day with the 300 2.8 on the tripod and all I get is lonely........

Also caught a group of Mergansers taking a break:

I was quite excited to be home today to catch all this action! Kudos to Mrs. Stormtech for spotting the Cormorant from the dining room!
