My goodness you have a lot of WPs in North America - lovely ! I was reading somewhere about how animals / birds crossed over from South America (and even more vice versa due to the more favourable climatic conditions down there) when the two continents fused. Interesting stuff.

Northern Cardinal

I've not had a lot of luck with Northern Cardinals over the years.

I never seem to get the colours just right. In any case I chanced upon a cooperative male Cardinal today.

Always a pleasure to see these guys. They brighten up a winter day.

Beautiful set! That Bluebird looks like a jailbird, though.

All these sigma 500 4,5 shots are making me all sorts of jealous! Are you hand holding these, monopod or tripod? I cant stand tripods, and never tried a monopod. But hand held will not alwasy (understatement) get me sharp results like shown here.. My da*300 is not enough^^

I shoot hand-held almost exclusively. However, I always carry with me my monopod with a sidekick attached. Sigma 500/4.5 gets heavy when you need to aim and wait for the action. In the field I can't stand tripods too. Monopod gives much more flexibility.

There is another recent hand-held shot: ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/400, almost no crop, just centered 1/3 cross on the eye.
The sharpness looks much more impressive on full screen, though: http://masters.galleries.dpreview.com.s3.amazonaws.com/2407594.jpg?AWSAccess...dw%2fS5ntK0%3d

Love the Cardinals. Looks like California is better habitat for squirrels, or maybe for obese squirrels.

This was a strange one. What species?

Watching a Dipper today. He found a fish egg:

Oops

I'm amazed at the sharpness of this lens. These are all crops about 1/5th of the width.

That's because of the way how we feed them
