Too bad with the shallow dof, but I did not see the otters before it was too late. Nice surprise, but I would like to have the opportunity to shoot this again with a smaller aperture

Managed to get close to this one after a while.
Nice ones Skog that DOF gets me every time as well

Love #1 Skog - I'd really like to hear the story there, if you know it.
I drove by and spotted a couple eagles out on the ice, so I crawled as close as I could and began shooting. I never saw the otters, just some black bits behind the eagle. I figured it was a carcass or something, so I payed it no attention (hence the open aperture). I only saw the otters after I zoomed in on a picture. I guess both eagle and otters were after the same thing; fish! Maybe the eagles was trying to steal an easy meal? Or maybe just resting from their own fishing, I don't know. I was surprised the otters dared to stay this close, but they did not seem to mind the eagle at all. Quick little buggers

I was out with the SMC A-400mm again today...

A few more bird shots, all the usual suspects...

It sort of turned into a cheese tasting party.

Are you also promoting jewelry? There are so many rings on the 2nd bird

Nice shooting, BTW.

Thanks for commenting...

the decline of Gray jays in Algonquin Park is being very closely studied. Thus the birdie bling.

Hock, thanks for posting your shots. You seem to be getting good results out of the 560.

Everyone tasted the cheese, Gray Jays wolf it down, the Nuthatches took some and even one Chickadee took off with a very large piece. That Gray Jay's cheeks are puffed like a chipmunks... full of cheese. I left the black oil sunflower seeds at home, what's a guy to do?

I saw these on many of the endangered birds in NZ too. The more birds of that species the more 'rings' so each individual can be identified purely by the colour of the rings. Some species only have 2 rings, some 3 up to 4 max.

Hi Hock,

I've thought about this some more and have a couple of questions :
1. You said hand-held from a car - but if you are anything like me (or most guys) you don't hand hold in the car per se (as in unsupported) but actually you rest it on something (even just your arm on the doorframe) - with the engine off of course. Is that what you meant ?
2. How far were you from the KF ? I know many birds don't see cars as a threat and so we can get really close. So I'm guessing this was under 10M ?

Thanks !

Hawk food - lots of mourning doves n my backyard. When a hawk hits them - it is like an explosion. Taken with SMC 500 and 1.7X AF converter. I just bought the 1.4x L rear converter and will post some comparison pictures.
