Heck of a great shot!

Just a couple of little birdies I shot in the 15-18F cold yesterday morning.......we are not used to that kind of cold here, and neither are the birdies. They were all fluffed up to stay warm!

If I come over there, can we cuddle?

Sure! But it will cost you, buy me breakfast!

Regards!

Pentax-FA* 300mm F2.8 ED vs Sigma 300mm 2.8

I have a question for you experienced bird photographers. I have recently purchased a K3 with hopes of eventually getting a nice lens for shooting birds. I have narrowed it down to the Sigma 300mm 2.8 with a teleconverter or possibly the Pentax DA300mm F4 and teleconverter if I get impatient and buy before I save enough for the Sigma. However I read great things about the old Pentax FA 300mm F2.8 and wonder how it compares with the Sigma 300mm F2.8 Looks like the two lenses are closely priced (new Sigma vs old Pentax) How would they stack up against each other? Also.. have I missed any possible good options?

Thanks, Bob

That large heron is a common bird as you say but I almost never see really good shots of it. I would like to see more.

As far as I know, The FA 300mm F/2.8 probably outperforms the Sigma 300mm F/2.8 in sharpness. The DA* 300mm isn't bad. Give me a choice between the DA*300mm and the Sigma 500mm F/4.5 for birds and the DA* stays home.

#4 is absolutely fantastic capture, and the other three aren't bad either.

Yes - if I had that choice........but you are talking about an $1100 lens vs. a $5000 lens.......

Well, are you within bicycle distance of the birds, or do you really need that car you have outside.

I'd personally like the sigma but the birds are too far away.

Just guessing here, but a 300mm is too short for most of what I shoot so the 50-500 Bigma gives me the range I need, although the IQ is not as good as a good 300mm 2.8. However, with the cropping abilities of the K3 it might be better to use a very good 300mm and crop?

I'd love to have a Sigma 500 4.5m but I'd have to go a year without buying squirrel feed...and you know I can't do that! Hungry squirrels love to eat Jeep wiring.

This is a 20% crop of the full frame, shot out my window at about 50feet distance, ISO 3200....It's about as good as my Bigma & K5 will do under those conditions. I'm thinking the K3 might do better...anyone want to guess?

Little Lady

I can't match you guys, but it sure doesn't keep me from enjoying your fantastic shots!

Regards!
