Amy I am comfortable enough with animals to take some risk and the only time I felt uncomfortable was when I laid down to get eye level, im not sure if that makes me dumb or irresponsible but when I got too close it definitely LMK.
Last fall I was ran down by a BHS in Rutting season which scared the crap out of me since I can't run that fast.

Great pics everyone. Travis, those Lynx pics are amazing. We have the smaller Bobcat, which is mostly nocturnal. I did see one early in the morning on a hike recently, but it was gone in a flash, so no photos.

I bought a sigma 170-500mm APO DG with no tripod ring at KEH so that I can get closer to smaller birds. I don't think I'll get a better 300mm+ for the price i got it for. I've already gotten several keepers.

Couple more.
.
+1 on the great photos . Like the cat Travis closest thing we may have is a wild Ferrel cat , they really decimate the birds , we only shoot them with a rifle

I also have thought a lot about the Sigma 300mm 2.8 with a 1.4x TC as a great birding lens but Sigma has not produced the 1.4 TC in K mount in at least a year and a half and no longer is available new in stores. I "believe" that they are no longer producing the 2x TC either in K mount but you can still find them in stores. That being the case, my question is whether the new Pentax 1.4TC will communicate fully with the Sigma lens. If it does then the 300mm, 2.8 is a great option especially since its currently on sale!

Northern Saw-whet Owl

I caught this Northern Saw-whet Owl basking in a little window of sun breaking into an opening in a spruce tree on a very cold but sunny morning, about -16 degrees Centigrade. K3 and DA*300.

What a great shot! The out of focus branches in the foreground really give the image nice depth. Love the eyes being mostly closed - just enough to peek at you!
