iittoo you nailed the exposure on that Hornbill. You've kept the detail in the black feathers and beak, and yet not blown the highlights. Well done, and an interesting bird as well.

You're absolutely right about the exposure balance act..... All I could do when I looked at that picture was wonder what the hell that bug was thinking......

I took this photo of a Pied Butcherbird (Imm.) sitting on our fence this morning.

K5 ISO 1600 600mm 1/3200"

I started to think about the magic of photography shortly after taking this photo. How things have changed since my first camera, a Kodak Box Brownie, when I was 8 years old and taking B&W photos of my cat. Then graduating to a K1000 with 50mm and then the Nikon FG with Sigma Series 1 70-210.

I am now shooting with what many would consider somewhat unsophisticated or agricultural to others. Lucky I live in the country....

I find amazing the images that I am able to render with a K5 with a circa 1979 2x Teleplus converter and a DA 55-300 4-5.8ED. I don't know how long it will take till I move up to something like a Sigma 120-400 or Tamron 100-600 or the Bigma but I am sure my amazement at what comes out of my camera will never decline.

It's great to be able to find satisfaction in such a simple pleasure and to forget everything else in life, if only for a moment in time.

Free Spirit - keep that attitude. It is the enjoyment of photography that keep me going. I don't have the best gear, but on the other hand I enjoy using my camera, and Claire enjoys using hers, and that's what really counts.
