A kestrel. I missed an opportunity today. This bird flew off and hovered for a good 5 seconds, enough to focus and get a dozen or more shots with the K-3. They were sharp, adequate shutter speed, but terribly overexposed. I had adjusted the exposure compensation for against the sky shots, then blew the highlights. Oh well.

Good day for Promaster 1.7

It must have known my new HD 1.4 is arriving shortly! There could be stiff competition for use with my F*300. Shot 3 action sequences and all came out real good but I had good lighting and contrasty subjects.
I am pretty blessed here as migrating water birds visit my marina regularly (I shoot right off my boat) and GBHs have nested in trees less than 200 yards away. I can look out my hatch and see if they are there!
Then I go to work in the other marina where a resident Loon is a real ham and I can photo him right off that boat!

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of my own to link of Thornbills but they're much smaller and quite a different shape. If you compare the bird to the Golden Whistler, you'll see it's the same size and shape. I saw the female Rufous Whistler on a lunchtime walk one day and got really excited because I thought it was something different, but it turned out to be a bird I've seen and heard many times - the male, at least!
I've had a good look through the Simpson and Day Field Guide and it's either a Thornbill on steriods gorwing by 50% or a Lemon Bellied Flycatcher, an exotic introduced or a new race of Whistler. It's got me stumped.!!!!!

We took a drive along Costello Creek in the park. It was getting a little dark so not the best shooting conditions but still we saw lots of wildlife.. some of it from very far away.

A-400 with 1.4 TC
Some of it a bit closer...
DA*60-250 with 1.4 TC.

It looks like Spring is coming to Algonquin Norm.
Like the way you framed the shot of the female Mallard. Reminds me of a Bateman painting.

I'm sure Bateman would have done a few sketches if he was there. Spring is coming real slow... I don't know if the ducks and geese have enough water to escape the wolves, but I guess they must... they're there. The beavers are out sunning on the ice... perhaps the only time of year they are relatively easy to photograph.

Went to the Chesapeake Bay to photograph Osprey. Just setting up the K-3 with Sigma 500 and Pentax 1.7TC in manual mode. Didn't quite have the focus nailed and the shutter speed was slow but had to take the shot when the opportunity arose. Un-cropped image

Well there should be a Sigma 400mm f5.6 Tele Macro waiting at home for me tonight. Now I just hope it lives up to its reputation.

A quick photo this evening...
a Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) that was dancing on the waves of the Richelieu River, Qc, just at the time after the sun got behind some clouds... maybe 100 yd away from the shore

Shot taken with the F*300mm hand held at f4.5, 1/800, ISO 800 on the K-5

Cropped image, just below 1:1
some PP in LR4 to enhance sharpness and tone...

I wanted to put my Tamron 1.4x TC, but decided not to do it because had not enough time...

Man! I love the sharpness of this amazing lens !

nice sharp shots Marcus! Interesting bokeh on first one. How difficult is the MF for you? I've heard mirror lenses are tougher that way
