That rainbow makes a most extraordinary appearance in the colour tones across the sky.

That was exactly how it appeared tonight when I shot it.... no post except a bit of sharpening.....I was suprised at how well it was captured...... I really struggle to capture sky shots that do the scene justice normally.

Its getting so this thread is a bit intimidating to post on as the quality of images is so consistently high, however, I have been trying to nail down some hummer shots and I am definitely starting to get a bit closer to what I want. I was out tonite and there were 5 of the little beggars whizzing around with one trying to dominate the tree where I have a feeder. Anyway here are a couple that I liked.
awesome robert!!! looks like you shot them with a really nice f300

Cape May Warbler

I know this does not technically fit here exactly but I do think it's relevant.

Taken with a 350 buck Sigma 18-250mm Macro super zoom at 250mm.
Was out in the garden taking garden shots when this little guy was right in front of me.
It was just a quick and dirty hand held snapshot with no time to adjust anything and was in TAv mode and AF.

My point is that this lens is not supposed to be this good.

If this is the rate that zooms are improving then I think it won't be too long before zooms replace primes
in the 500mm and below range for most folks. They are just getting good enough which hasn't been
true in the past for shots like this.

Time will tell...

Note: A Cape May Warbler is not much larger than a man's thumb.

The trick with not so good lenses, is to be close.... I've also gotten great results with my Sigma 70-300, considered to be one of the dogs of the zoom universe. At infinity and 300mm compared to a DA*60-250 it's a piece of doo doo. It's images actually look like a DA*60-250 image that's been altered with a Photoshop Watercolour filter. At 12 feet it's a great lens.

Get a little closer and it's a dog again, nice photos , but soft compared to what you'd get with a dedicated macro lens. And the thing there is, you might actually prefer the softer image, it looks more natural.

I felt the same way about the Tamron version and Sigma has been putting out some really awesome zooms. The thing is, who zooms when shooting wildlife? We (almost) always go to the long end, right?

Depends, I have a bunch of wildlife images like this one taken with the 1.4 ad TC where the actual FL is 196. So I could have gone to 350, but in fact, I didn't need the 1.4.... and still would have had to shorten the 250... you just never know.

Just throw these out to make my point.

Full frame and 1:1 original crop right off the RAW file at distance (infinity?)
and
Full frame at about 20-25 feet or so.
Both at 250mm and hand held.

Remember we are talking about the lowly despised super zoom here.
