To be clear - its a DA*300mm. Its not a bird in a jumble of branches either - I'm talking swans against grass on a sunny day when it was not locking on about 25-30% of the time. I'll give the store a call - I'm thinking a replacement may be in order.
I had a similar problem with another lens and had it replaced. I have not had any problems with the new lens. All the best.

The great thing about the Tamron 55BB mirror is its small enough to just grab and take along, by default it becomes the lens to get a lot of pics. Happily I am becoming very satisfied with the IQ. The swans were feeding in their inlet, tide being out, browsing on the sea grass (looked like). Crop:

and one of the cygnets.

Very impressive with the 55BB! That is one of those lenses that I regret selling at times........You sure but the best out of it with these shots!

A pair of White Eyes, I must say not easy to shoot these hyper-active small little birds, am glad to have 2 in a perch.

Thanks Stan. Obviously the 55BB is never going to match a lens like the 300*, but given the it cost less than a hundred bucks while the 300* is more like four figures, YMMV
One more for your delection.
