These are great, as were the ones you posted before. I am in the Wildfire fighting business in the US, and these shots are as good as any I have seen

Grackles

These guys are regular visitors. A decent shot requires strong morning light.

BTW: I've figured out why there've been no raptors in my tree this year: my neighbor decided that pigeon feed was too expensive. I'd volunteer to pitch in but...you know...lenses ;~)

Interesting, I didn't read your lead and went through the pictures and couldn't figure out one picture..... "duh". Biology is a good thing so thank you for posting a teaching moment. And as usual, your pictures are tops! Plus... living in the center of the country I'd never have imagined that there would be porpoises in a river!

Thanks.

There were four of the float planes doing circuits and drops. The fire was above Slocan Park and they were picking up just downstream of the old Taghum bridge.

I learned today on the Science Talk podcast that they mate at about 40mph.

thanks Bob...actually it isn't common for them to be in the river but the water is brackish and close to the chesapeake bay which is why we were fortunate to see them ...it is the second time in 20 years that i have seen them on the river so i hope i don't have to wait another 20

The Chesapeake Bay is really the sunken Susquehanna River valley and most of the tributaries have brackish tidal estuaries which, for the sake of simplicity, are referred to as rivers. The Potomac River, for example becomes tidal just above Washington, DC--at least 50 miles above its junction with the Bay.

Here's something from this weekend. There were a few birds but this was much more colorful.

That 300mm Sears arrived yesterday, and I've been putting it through its paces to see what $30 buys you in the world of long lenses.

Most f this is crossposted from the Sears thread, but there really isn't much crossover between the Sears thread and this one, so all should be good.

Mind, my camera's sensor is damaged, so any weird lines or discoloration is from that, not the lens.

This guy suddenly just showed up (and almost pooped on me to boot, that would have been unpleasant). I didn't have time to readjust the lens, so I wound up with some really massive purple fringing to stomp down as he was shot wide open and overexposed against a grey sky.
