Hah, I wish! I was taking shots of it while it was sitting in a field, then left before I spooked it. Not even 10 minutes later a few photogs ran into the field, scared it from it's spot and it flew to a tree MUCH closer to me. As they came running up, it flew... right at me and like a foot from hitting me. Scared doesn't even begin to describe how I was feeling in that moment.

Is that the FA* 400mm f5.6...
Yes it is! I put all my eggs in one basket and traded my 60-250, so I've only got the 400 for wildlife now.

Gary and Kameko those are great shots. The owl is striking.
Thanks Derek!

Boreal Owl

My first encounter with the Boreal Owl. It doesn't seem too happy to see me though.

Wow, amazing video, now all there's left to do is layer the voice of David Attenborough and you're good to go.
My girl friend and I watch a lot of PBS and nature shows. As soon as David comes on it only takes about 5 minutes before she goes off into a deep sleep from the sound of his voice. Even her daughters give her a hard time about it. Now the Honey Badger... I think of that everyday with my new puppy LOL. What do you expect from a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever though!

Went back to where I took the shots of the GBH nests to grab a little bit of video of the nesting activities.

I also saw the Cormorants are starting to move in, this shot is with Q7 and DA*300.

The video is with the Q7 and Sigma 70-200 so doesn't natively qualify here but equivalent is 322 - 920mm so maybe we can let it slide as I thought it might be interesting?
Very nice video Larry - sure looks like you have a stable rig - not a hint of vibration or movement.

And my favorite Cormorant - I still find it so weird that they nest in the trees.

Was aiming to shoot the sandpiper on the ground then suddenly this Buffy Fish Owl landed and chased the sandpiper away.
A lucky catch for me as owl to me is hard to find, not to mention exposed in the open with wings spread wide open.

Shot with K3 + Sigma 500 F4.5 + HD Pentax DA AF 1.4X AW Rear Converter, 90% cropped (for composition)

I've never encountered one (yet)

Now that's super luck--and you certainly took full advantage of the opportunity.

In some cities with a comparatively mild clima in winter, such as Düsseldorf, there are some real "jailbreakers"!
Ring-necked parakeets, living in high old plane trees of the city parks. Since the early eighties there lives a growing population of them.

Fascinating how those birds can survive in an environment so different from their home territory.
