Went for a walk with my K3, SMC Pentax-A 400mm and 1.4XS and all I managed was this solitary common grackle. Spring is slowly returning to Southern Ontario but the local ponds are still ice covered, and there are very few birds around, apart from some frisky geese

The Sigma TC has an element that extends into the lens. It can only be used with lenses that have a recessed rear element. I don't think this is the case with the Pentax TC.
Home now. I've compared both. The rear element of the Sigma lens moves away from the TC as you go from 70 to 300, so I think we should be ok.

I recently received the Sigma 150-500 and finally had the opportunity to play around with it this weekend.

Great tit (Parus major)

White-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus)
How are you liking the 150-500? I have been looking at this lens as a potential purchase. I was not sure how well it would work for birding. I see however you got some really nice shots with yours. Well done.

After 40 years service, our local lake has been drained and "restored" to a "wetlands" four or five years ago.
I went for my first look this week (I know, I'm slow) and found no water and practically no wildlife!
I did find a massive eagle's nest (the bird nearby is probably an Australian Hobby - who tend to take over other bird's nests)
I couldn't get close enough for any sort of shot of the Hobby.

This is just one view of the incredible number of dead trees left in the area.

Here are a couple from my Tokina AF 400mm F5.6. Still trying to get the hang of this lens.

So far, so good, I would say. It's a little bit soft at the long end but if you use it in good light and stop it down, it produces good image quality.

The AF is nice and quiet, although not the fastest, and the OS is great. For birding, I think it does great.

It might not be the best for lens for shooting birds in flight (from the experience I've had so far). I'm using it with a K-5 and feel like the K-5's AF system might hold the lens back from performing at its best. Maybe a K-3 would do better? With that said, the lens gives you great bang for the buck. So if you choose to get one, I think you wouldn't get disappointed.

With the K-3 the autofocus is still disappointing. It is too slow for most bird in flight opportunities to get tack sharp images. I'm going to upgrade to the 150-450 just so I can shoot at f5.6 (150-500 requires you to shoot at f8 or f10 to get sharp shots) and to have better AF.

Isn't the 150-450 an f5.6 lens at the long end? I should have experimented more with the Promaster lens. I was always amazed at home fast the AF adjusted on it, so if the 150-450 is similarly speedy, it would be wonderful.

Yes the 150-450 is f5.6, I fixed the typo. Hopefully it's sharp wide open and speedy AF (and it drops in price for us poor bastards in AUS being $3000 at launch...)

Actually more than that by my calculation, but hopefully it will drop in price. The low AUD might be nice for exports but not the other way around. I'll see if I can try one out in Tokyo at the end of the year - I'm in no great rush to spend that sort of money on a lens unless I'm sure it's what I'm looking for.

An early sign of Spring - the wild swans have arrived on the north shore of Lake Erie, en route to their breeding grounds on Hudson Bay and in the Arctic.
