I have been thinking about that...

...first of all for this purpose body size doesn't really matter that much. After all at this magnification it's going to be mounted on a robust tripod anyway. What I really want is a body about the size of of a m4/3 or bigger with with all of the controls that I have on my K5, a real focal plane shutter, a fast RAW buffer, and an EVF optimized for manual focus with focus peaking and focus beep and a histogram with ETTR metering. Sort of a K5 with a EVF and a Q-S1 sized sensor.

It's been my experience shooting normal sized passerines (about the size of a House Sparrow) that I need about 40x magnification which would require an 1100mm prime on a APS-C body.
Too big, too heavy and too expensive. In a word - impractical.
At that same magnification with a Q-S1 that magnification would only require 380mm - a huge difference.

Still waiting for my dream birding setup.

Following all taken with 560mm and the Q-S1....

Nice! Help me out here--which is which? I'm guessing the apparently smaller one is Jupiter--am it I seeing moons accompanying it?

Thanks. You are right :-). Smaller one and tiny dot are Jupiter and one of its moon. If you aim and try for only Jupiter, you may get 3 moons also. The brighter one is Venus.

The goose does look good. What were the conditions when you captured it?

Thanks! Early morning, about 3 - 4 am. There was mist over the lake and the sunrise had just begun.

I'm a regular observing fan of this thread and its many fabulous contributors. Just for fun, I'll throw in this sample from a very uncommon variant. It's a left over from the film era and not a real top notch performer- but then again at one time in the past used samples could be purchased for as low $60 USD. Olympus (OM) Zuiko 300mm F4.5 Multicoated film era.

Example image was taken with the lens braced against a wall, and the Pentax K5 camera mount was pressed onto the Olympus mount by hand. The image was processed using Adobe's LightRoom 'Auto' feature. Actual aperture unknown but likely stopped down to f8 or f11:
