Originally posted by pete-tarmigan It appears to be a dark, juvenile Red-tailed Hawk, i.e., either the dark phase of the western Red-tail (Buteo jamaicensis calurus) or a Harlan's Red-tail (B. j. harlani). The pale speckling on the median coverts, pale banding on the primaries, and the equal width of the tail bands make it a Red-tail. The banded tail and pale iris indicate juvenile.
Thanks. I looked later and didn't update my post, and the photo was identical to one in my hawk book. Hawks in Flight, second edition. I was also able to identify the Coopers hawk as well as a juvenile.
On two days, Saturday and Tuesday, at two different locations separated by 12 miles at least, two kingfishers were being harassed by a young Coopers hawk. Quite striking.

Your butterfly and insects shots have been very nice. There are lots of great shots here, some contributors I watch for. I watch for yours, they are excellent. Not only good technically but they do what we all attempt, elicit a reaction.
