FYI: A grad student here @ UMASS has been doing a long-term study of opossums in New England. They do not hibernate and have poor thermal insulation. Consequently they can only survive by finding winter shelter close to a human dwelling. Without humans, there wouldn't be any opossums this far north. Also, the average lifespan is no more than about two years, but females can birth young by the end of their first year and can produce up to three litters per year, about 8 young per litter. A slow animal living life in the fast lane.
