This morning I was practicing some BIF with manual focus and the Sigma 4.5/500.
Here's one that came out quite ok.

The EXIF shows 40mm ... I am embarrassed to confess that I forgot to select the correct value of 500mm.
Not good for the shake reduction! Grrr....

Great Horned Owl

Cross posting form the "Bird Portraits" thread with some extras.

Yesterday was very windy in LA (today is even worse). So, I postponed my birding activities and stayed at home. To my surprise I discovered "home delivery". On Saturday morning (yesterday) I spotted a Great Horned Owl right out of my 2nd floor bedroom window. So I took a few pictures from the window, then little bit closer - from my backyard, and 4-5 hours later I could not resist and climbed the slope. There is what I got.

Shot as usual handheld with K-3 and Sigma 500/4.5

BTW: the bird stayed all day and I lost a sight of it in the darkness. Today in the morning (Sunday) I've seen the bird again in the same tree, on the same branch. As I said it looks like I have earned special "home delivery" treatment from the Nature.

Thank you for your positive responses to the Roadside Hawk shot. Most of pics I post are recent but but that one was taken in Belize a few years ago.

These Ross's Geese flew in from the north and circled in front of us while we were on a walk today - you can see the Toronto skyline in behind. A very rare bird in southern Ontario, though a few have shown up just recently. K3 with DA*300mm + Pentax 1.4x TC

Great shots and well done, had no idea they are that far East now! Migration takes them down over the Dakotas and I see them with other light geese often when hunting pheasants on the prairies in the fall, but never seen them much to the East. Hope you get to capture more and more of them!

Treasured Visitor
Fortunately I was near the window and the camera was within easy reach when two male cardinals visited. I could not photograph them together.
Handheld Pentax K-S2 with SMC Pentax F 1:4.5-5.6 100-300mm at 300mm, ISO 800, f/7.1, 1/320, through window glass; minor contrast adjustment in Viveza 2 from the Nik Collection
