Sitting in the kitchen with the A400 and 1.4 TC, through the glass, I haven't tried that for a while.

K1, FF mode, 150~450, deeply cropped. Tree Swallow, VERY, VERY fast, if I anticipate him entering the FOV, with HS sequence I'll catch him once. maybe twice

I have been trying to photograph the blue tits nesting under the eaves of one of the hides at the reserve.

Adaptall 200-500mm @ f18/f20, 200-300mm, Rogue safari flash extender. I did a test shot without flash at f20, 1/180th, it was dark basically so I think I have cut out the ambient light. Had to prefocus, use the remote trigger and hope for the best. One shot at a time - had to wait for the flash to recharge. Lots of pics of wing tips and tail feathers . Even more empty pics.

I thought that the flash would be good to freeze the motion but it doesn't seem to be working. I tried adjusting the flash from +1 to -1 power to reduce the duration, not sure if that helped really. Any suggestions?

Couple of "head shot" crops also taken with the adaptall 31A.

An outing to Waterton Lakes National Park with K-3

Cross posted these two with the K-3 sample shots thread. A Cinnamon Phase Black Bear with twin cubs. This is a very attractive colour. I'm not sure of the percentage of Black Bear that have this colouration, but I like it a lot. This is almost a blond bear. The Black Bear population can have 5% to 25% of lighter colours according to some sites I have visited. She is pretty!

Manfrotto 055B tripod with LensMaster RH-2 gimbal head, M 400/5.6.

1/250 @ f/11, ISO 800

1/750 @ f/11, ISO 800. Brightened in LR 6.3 almost two stops.

I was a little startled by how the wings were drawn in, almost folded against the body. Watching them swoop over the fields, I had the impression they kept their wings well out almost all the time.

Stopping down to ~f20 may gain some DOF but at some loss of IQ because of diffraction. You might be better at about f8 to f11. Not knowing what kind of flash you're using, it's hard to advise on output adjustment. I would go with manual flash, not pTTL and start testing @ about 1/8 power or less. Kick up the ISO rather than boosting the flash output. Run tests before hand, approximate the distance somewhere else and fire off shots to determine what flash output & ISO are correct. The smaller the flash output, the shorter the duration of the flash and the better the motion-stopping will be. At full power, most strobes have a duration of about 1/1000 second. As the power output is reduced the flash duration goes to 1/2000 at half power, 1/4000 at 1/4 power, and so forth. Most modern flash units with a variable manual output will go to at least 1/16,000 second, some to 1/128/000 of a second. With near black conditions, you should get decent reduction of motion blur once the flash output goes to about 1/8 power or less.

Since the birds are hiding in the Rhododendren and the Raccoons make their stop at 3:30 in the morning, it's berry, Mountain Laurel, and wildflower time with the A/400. Hoping for jam by the end of June.

Loved looking at these, we don't get to see cinnamon phase black bears here in NJ. And those cubs are adorable!
