I was shooting along with a professional using two D810 bodies mounted on 600 f4 and 200-400 f4 (worth $25K). It was amazed that some of his shots were out of focus... and while I did not stay as long as him on the location, I have to say that what I got from the K1 with the same framing and lighting is pretty much identical to what he got with his Nikon gear. Get what, he was shooting at f8 to prevent DoF issue. The difference is essentially that the Pentax gear is sub $4K, a lot cheaper than the Nikon gear. What I got back from that experience was that framing and lighting was what made the difference between a good shot and a bad shot, and I would get better images with his $25K gear. But of course, owning this Nikon gear is no much "sexier" than owning a Pentax gear, that's marketing.

Interesting, so poor technique to blame as well (him)? I shoot f8 most of the time, light allowing, so that's not an issue for me, at these focal lengths with subjects at distance you get massive compression of perspective.

I would think naively that regardless of price a good 600mm f/4 + TC would have helped significantly on the 2 photos you just submited

But yes this is first being at the right place at the right moment, knowing what compo etc to capture and finally knowing enough of your gear to make it happen.

I can say still my 55-300 need f/8+ and isn't very sharp at 300mm. This limit sometime the bokeh I get and also the possibilities of cropping. This is always a idea of diminushing returns.

But yes when the light is not good or the subject too far away, the best gear doesn't make it look nice. It just make it less bad.

Nikon guy isn't using TC, he does not like TC. He is using a 200-400 zoom without TC and 600 f4 without TC and without crop, so, no more reach than I with DFA150-450 f5.6 on K1.
And, the best photos aren't tight shots on the animal without background but instead wanted animal its living environment. For the two shots I submitted the problem was that the shutter speed (1/400) wasn't enough to freeze bird motion (first shot) and that the light wasn't right (evening shadow for the second shot) , so were shot at ISO3200, and TC would have make the situation worse.

but surely not the f/4 setting for the isos... As for what are the best shots or most wanted, we speak of aesthetics, artistic value. There no absolute everything can be used in the right or wrong way. Most of the time the question doesn't even arise because people don't manage to be that near and they get what they can rather than fully controlling what they do And I surely include myself in this.

Well, considering f16 rule, good lighting is at 2 f stops below full sun (f16 -> f11 -> f8 , 1/100, ISO100). And considering shutter speed of about 1/400 or 1/500, for f5.6 450mm lens, we are already at ISO800. Stopping down the lens to f7 to get a bit more sharpness, we are at iso1600, which is where resolution drops in crop mode. With 600 f4 prime, there is 1 or 2 stop margin, but a lot more expensive...

I just picked up a huge snow blower yesterday second hand, to act as a back up to my other blower. I've got 400 feet of driveway more than half of it across crown land. You can never have too many snow blowers.
