This is a male Greater Spotted Woodpecker. It came in for food that I had put out. Taken from the drivers seat of a car. K-5/FA*600mmF4ED[IF]/Eckla window mount.

Nice picture of a woodpecker I've never seen. However, the ornithologists have chosen a not so obvious name for some unknown reason. I bet we could give it a more obvious name like Red Rumped something or other... When you do your bird photography book "Shooting Birds from My Car" or "Drive by Shooting" maybe you could also come up with interesting bird names? We could all come up with suggestions ;-)

Ken, your pictures with the Sigma 500mm 4.5 are razor sharp as usual. Did this lens shoot this sharp right out of the box or did you need to do a little in camera adjusting?

Thanks

The rump is black, not red. It has spots and is bigger than the lesser spotted woodpecker (there's a middle-spotted as well) so that's good enough for me. What bugs me is when an interesting name is changed to something more boring - like from "Andalusian Hemipode" to "Small Button-Quail".

Great shots as usual Gary.

I've been carrying camera and lens in vain on numerous sorties to the RSPB. Finally some sun after a frosty night, and a co-operative bird or two. K5, adaptall 200-500mm 31A

A tit got in on the action.

Thanks woodywesty, these are straight out of the box, no sharpening in post processing and the camera setting used is Natural which is also zero sharpness.

I went looking for the buntings again - no luck. This egret however was catching the low winter sun. K5, 31A, f9

But more bunting pics next....

I love that flight shot Travis! Can't wait until we have more out this way

One of my baldies from this afternoon. The juvies never look regal or majestic, at most gawky and awkward.

Last few end of the year shots, Siberian Blue Robin. Gotten the juvenile shots last year. I'm so happy that managed to get this small passerine bird in more prominent blues this year, the color is nicer on this round but the lighting condition (extremly low light) is very challenging..

Siberian Blue Robin (juvenile) - 2015 Dec

Siberian Blue Robin (adult bird) - 2016 Dec

Great commotion on the shoreline! At least 3 old blokes attracting the attention of passing dogwalkers and their assorted mutts and pooches with their scopes and lenses. What's up? Just a trio of snow buntings. Actually they have been around for a while, I must have heard of sightings first at least a month ago, but hadn't had any luck spotting them myself on my fairly frequent perambulations along the shore line. Anyway, I scuttled back for lens and tripod, yep still there so I was happily snapping away. Obliging birds, (actually someone had spread around some seed/nuts) good light with the sun , low over the welsh hills, peeping under the cloud cover like a well aimed studio light. Then my camera bleeped. "memory card full". Well thats never happened before, not with 16GB card. Still I had more than enough pics to be going on with. K5, 31A, f8/f9, 800ASA/1600ASA.

Thank you for replying. I have the Sigma 300mm 2.8 and 500mm 4.5 and both seem to be a hair off so I'm going to try to do some in camera adjusting. Hopefully I can get something close to the sharp focus you always have! ;-)

I picked up my early birthday present yesterday and had to test out ASAP. A Sigma 1.4x TC to go with my new to me Sigma 500. I guess that'd make it 700mm @ f/6.3
