They will stay on the lake all winter if there is open water.
The swans might have a bit of trouble as the ice expands since they feed mostly off the bottom and don't dive, but those duck can dive to 200 feet. They eat a lot of mussels off the bottom.

I guess having the lake open is the issue! Here in Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota there isn't any open water but by early March the Wood ducks will start coming back! ;-)

You can see the veins in the nictitating membrane. I still love my Sigma 150-500.

How close did you get for this?
Nice shot!

Kameko's Barred Owl is beautiful. This was the best I could do with the light I had today - tried both with and without the T/C but this one with the DA*300 and the T/C came out best despite 3200 ISO.

I was going to say about the same for my first bird pic of 2017...
But this one was pretty far (maybe 200 ft?)

Very Good Jacamar!
In my experience, it's always betetr to get a well exposed with higher ISO than trying to underexpose with lower ISOs..

Nice shots guys! My first wildlife in 2017, the Mountain Imperial Pigeon and Barn swallow. Taken with K70 and Sigma 150-500mm with 1.7x TC.

You made me get my European field guide out - your Siskins are much yellower than ours. Great shots - it seems like that was a fun session.
Thanks, Jacamar. It is so much fun everytime!

Some more shots with DA*300 @ 420mm.

This guy chased the Merlin above and took his place
This is the emblematic bird of my city... there are so many around, but are so hard to photograph. It's the first time I get a decent shot of this bird.

You're right about crows and ravens - hard to pull any detail out of the black plumage but you seem to have done a great job.

Barred Owls are my favorite owls. We have a lot of them around here, more heard than seen, however. One winter, though, we had a Great Horned Owl hooting in the oak tree by the house, and we hardly heard a sound out of a Barred owl that year!

The buntings were still there today. The same three, scuttling around in the sme area. No photographers, I didn't take a camera along myself, it's not so much fun when a stiff breeze is picking up the sand and stinging ones face (and potentially getting into any photographic kit).
Yesterday however was perfect, blue sky and sunshine, and I snapped away with the canon 400mm and NX20. Is this lens that much better than the 31A? I think the main factor is ~ 3 stops worth better ambient light. These were at 200ASA (and f8), the ones in post #24170 at 800 or 1600ASA. And I managed to get significantly closer.
