Well, I've been back from the south for a week or so, and so far haven' had much sun. We had some today, but by the time I was out in the blind it was mostly gone.

K-3 and Tamron SP AF 300 2.8 with HD DA 1.4 TC for 420mm ƒ4.
640 ISO, ƒ8 (or ƒ5.6) 1/250s - 1/500s.

Male Downy

The male Downy left with the arrival of the Male Hairy

Later the female Hairy turned up

Various Goldfinches

For some reason they just love this old feeder I haven't used for a few years. I put it up as an extra resource when I was gone for 9 days. They love it so much I can't bring myself to take it down. All these guys are perched on nearby branches waiting for their turn.

And of course the regulars....

Been awhile since I have posted as I am still dealing with FEMA and my Bank from Hurricane Hermine, they sure don't get in a hurry with dispersing money in a timely fashion but maybe that's a good thing as I have a desire for the K-1, D FA 150-450 and the DA 560
Anyway, took the K-5ii and Bigma for a walk this Morning as they were feeling neglected and was lucky enough to catch this Dolphin playing with this Mullet for a good 5 minutes, just tossing it up in the air, catching it, and having just a grand old time.

it is our most popular goldfinch feeder as well
we load it with sunflower hearts now

when temps went from 40+ to 6 or so the crew of finches went from six to a high of twenty-nine (diane does a feeder count on the weekends)
high caloric yield for minor energy expenditure?
for some reason most of the other species hang out at the other feeders

you've taken some nice images, as always

I wonder if anyone else has tried an A-400 on a K-1

K-1 and SMC Pentax A-400.
3200 ISO, ƒ8 or 6.3.

I ask you, has any A-400 ever been shot at 3200 ISO before? Perhaps a Pentax first.

I was working pretty close to minimum focussing distance at about 275mm K-3 mm, and small fast birds with MF is not treat, but everything is possible.

My 4 for 40 keeper rates is actually respectable for the little guys, although I did lower my standards a little to achieve that.

You maybe can't tell I lowered my standards a this size, you're going to have to take my word for it.

The snow buntings, I hear, are all over facebook. I chatted to a guy who had come from Macclesfield, a couple of hours away, to photograph the snow buntings with his nikon 300mm f2.8 + TC. He said upwards of twenty twitchers had been and gone. The glorious sunshine would've been worth it, however I'm happy I only had to walk 15mins.
This T-noflexar 400mm is not the same one as my previous novoflex posts though, I picked up an older novoflex in order to acquire the shoulder stock and put the optic on my later "PIGRIFF". For me this one is not as sharp as the Canon 400mm, or the other T-noflexar IMO. NX20, f8 and f11.

(That's deep blue... sea actually!)

The buntings look like they're going to be around for a while. I think I'll try the 500mm mirror next...
But let me know if you're beginning to feel a bunting surfeit...

Good shots, Norm. Especially the second one.

Still with the K-1 and A-400,

Next day with better light and 800 ISO and F 11... much more contrasty results....

The main issue is 600 FF is sort of a minimum for birding. The 400 on a K-1 is not much better than a DA*60-250 on APS-c. Believe it or not, I bought this lens from a man who used it as his long lens for weddings on film. These images are cropped, with the same lens and my K-3... as I said, more proof of concept than practical.

These Waxwings were a couple of miles from my house feeding on Rowan berries. I had to get out of the car to take these.
K-5/FA*600mmF4ED[IF] on a Gitzo 1348

Back in the car for these.

Waxwings are IMHO one of the prettiest of the passerines, in their understated way. I especially like the three on a branch. That is so waxwing.

Amazing pictures of the snail. I'd be happy to be at the "beginners level". Never tried focus tracking but maybe I had better!
